Period products are now free at SUNY and CUNY schools

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- A bill requiring public colleges and universities in New York to provide free menstrual products in campus restrooms became a new law, Monday. In support of Women's Equality Day, Governor Kathy Hochul signed new legislations to expand resources for women's health.

In March 2023, Senator Michelle Hinchey (D-Saugerties) introduced the amendment to the bill and included a replacement to the term "feminine hygiene' to "menstrual" within it. Before she introduced the amendment, free menstrual products were made available in elementary and secondary public schools.

"Menstrual products are a fundamental health necessity, and no one should be held back in school, work, or life because they can’t afford or access them. I’m incredibly proud that our bill making menstrual products available for free in all SUNY and CUNY restrooms has been signed into law," Hinchey said. "This legislation is a huge step forward in our fight to end period poverty, reduce financial stress and stigma often surrounding menstruation, and bring us closer to true equity and dignity for people who menstruate."

In addition to passing this bill, Hochul signed a bill to require commercial health insurers to provide coverage for tattooing as part of breast reconstruction surgery if provided by a physician or health care practitioner, into law. According to Hochul, these new laws are a step to continue fighting for equal rights.

"Women have come so far in the fight for equal rights, but there is still more to do," Hochul said. "New York will always be a leader in protecting and expanding women’s rights. As the first woman to serve as Governor of this great state, I will continue to champion women's equality and reproductive healthcare."
