I want to give my baby a Greek name but my family hates it – critics say the NSFW meaning makes it a ‘very odd choice’
A FRUSTRATED mom has shared the Greek-inspired baby name she loves but her family hates.
Though her loved ones were against it, the mom asked viewers for advice.
The reaction, however, didn’t go as she’d anticipated.
The mom, posting as Adikay1 on the What to Expect parenting forum, revealed the controversial baby name.
“Eros Jan (yhun) Baker. What do you think?” she asked.
Critics slammed the mom for considering the name of Eros, a Greek god of love.
While the name seems innocent and adoring enough at first, critics pointed out the name’s deeper etymology and origin.
Eros is the Greek god of carnal love. In Latin, he is known as “Amor,” or love. He is also seen as the god of desire and fertility.
In Greek mythology, Eros is typically depicted as a handsome young adult or a mischievous boy with wings.
The son of Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, Eros is also known by his Roman counterpart, Cupid, who is infamous for his antics that involve inducing people into love by shooting arrows into their hearts.
One supportive viewer felt that the mother should go with her gut and well, desires.
“I think if y’all love the name, choose it. it’s your kid, after all. Your family had their opportunities to choose names for their children,” they said.
“If they allowed family members to dictate how they felt about the names, that’s on them. Speaking from experience. I named my daughter Zoe, and you would have thought all hell [had frozen] over for my mother.”
Critics, however, dissuaded her from the seductive advice.
“I mean, Eros is the root word of erotic, right? Seems a very odd choice to name to name a human,” said one commenter.
Others couldn’t help but agree that while the adoring intention is there, the execution felt like a missed shot.
“Normally, I’d say to name your child what you want,” said one.
The viewer explained that they also named their child a name their family disapproved of.
“My mother hated/probably still hates my daughter’s name,” they said.
“But are you aware of the meaning of that name? The Greek god of sex? That’s a tough one.”
“Jan is fine. Not a fan of Eros as he’s basically the Greek god of sex,” agreed another.
“Jan is fine, but I wouldn’t name my child after Cupid,” said a third.
One commenter gave the name a hard pass, explaining that it was too sinful for their standards.
“Eros? No. Just no,” they said.
