Ex-England star Jonjo Shelvey, 32, joins minnows with stadium four times smaller than former club Liverpool

JONJO SHELVEY has signed for Turkish minnows Eyupspor following his release from Nottingham Forest.

The former England star had a spell in Turkey last season with Çaykur Rizespor, where he scored three goals in 33 games.

Shelvey had signed a two-and-a-half-year deal at Forest but his contract was terminated after just eight months following a fallout with former manager Steve Cooper.

He has now signed a deal with Eyupspor, who are managed by former Barcelona and Atletico Madrid star Arda Turan.

Shelvey, 32, has joined at a prime time for Eyupspor, who are second in the Super Lig with seven points from three games.

The minnows are punching above their weight and it is a big change of scenery for Shelvey, who won six England caps.

The midfielder also made 69 appearances for Liverpool, whose 61,276 capacity stadium dwarves Eyupspor’s modest 13,797 seat ground.

Eyupspor are the eighth club of Shelvey’s career and the Istanbul-based outfit are competing in the top tier for the first time in their history following promotion last season.

Shelvey caught the eye last season after scoring from inside his own half for Caykur Rizespor.

Galatasaray and Fenerbahce were linked with a move for the former Newcastle star along with other European clubs.
