School AC installation progresses amid challenges

The progress of installing air conditioning units in public schools was the main focus of a meeting held on Tuesday between Education Minister Athena Michaelidou and the presidents of the school boards of Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca, Paphos and Paralimni-Deryneia, along with the director-general of the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC).

According to a statement released by the education ministry on Wednesday, the first air conditioning units are expected to be operational when students return to school.

During the meeting it was highlighted that despite obstacles and the fact that school boards – the primary bodies responsible for the project’s implementation – are undergoing changes following the local elections in June, the installation process in the first 50 schools across all districts has begun.

The statement also stressed that as part of a holistic approach, “the completion of electromechanical studies and EAC’s inspections are essential prerequisites.”

“These procedures are being completed concurrently with the installation,” the statement added.

The next phase of the project, which will involve an additional 50 schools, is set to commence around the end of September.

“The goal remains to complete the project within the three-year timeline, with the current tender process expected to be followed throughout the entire period. This timeline has been coordinated with the general accounting office of the Republic,” it continued.

The education ministry reiterated that the process would continue without setbacks until all schools are equipped with air conditioning units.

“The government’s determination to see this project through is clear. Alongside the installation of air conditioning, energy upgrades for all public-school buildings, such as roof insulation, tree planting, and shading, are also ongoing,” the statement concluded.
