Kansas food supply chain strengthened with $5.6 million investment

TOPEKA (KSNT) - Governor Laura Kelly is injecting more than $5 million into nearly 50 projects across the state to improve Kansas' food supply chain.

Kelly made the announcement on Wednesday, Aug. 28 through a press release. A total of $5.6 million is being awarded to 49 projects in the Sunflower State.

“Kansas’ central location and abundant agriculture production are critical to the nation’s food supply chain,” Kelly said. “By investing in our producers and businesses in this sector, we are strengthening economic growth across the state.”

Eight grants will go towards improving producer infrastructure in Kansas while 41 others will increase strength of the middle of the state's food supply chain operations. These are provided through the Resilient Food Systems Infrastructure (RFSI) program and administered by the Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA).

"These grants will help Kansas food and farm businesses and other eligible organizations create diverse local and regional market options and more economic opportunities for our Kansas communities," said Secretary of Agriculture Mike Beam. "With this financial support, we will see improvements across the middle of our state's food supply chain, including increased food processing infrastructure, producer aggregation points, and product storage.”

Each project selected for this dispersal of cash were told by engagement and outreach efforts with underserved producers to understand the needs of the agriculture supply chain. The $5.6 million comes from $420 million available through the federal American Rescue Plan.
