Box office: ‘Inside Out 2’ just days away from becoming 10th biggest domestic movie of all time

In just a matter of days, we could see a huge shake-up to the list of the Top 10 biggest domestic movies of all time. “Inside Out 2” has currently amassed $646 million at the U.S. box office, which puts it only about $7 million away from the current 10th place film, “Jurassic World” (2015), and its $653 million haul. “Inside Out 2” is directed by Kelsey Mann and stars the voice talents of Amy Poehler, Maya Hawke, Kensington Tallman and Liza Lapira, among others. The Pixar and Walt Disney collaboration features the return of several beloved emotions (such as Joy, Sadness and Fear) who must deal with a new set of feelings (including Anxiety, Envy and Ennui) as the human child they all inhabit enters adulthood.

It only took “Inside Out 2” two days to reach the $100 million milestone after being released on June 14. It then crossed the $200 million mark on Day 5, the $300 million mark on Day 9, the $400 million mark on Day 13, the $500 million mark on Day 21 and the $600 million mark on Day 40. As of this writing, it’s still playing in more than 1,000 theaters nationwide, so the box office will continue to grow for the animated fan-fave.
“Inside Out 2” is the 28th feature film from Pixar to be released, and it’s also the company’s highest-grossing entry ever, both domestically and worldwide. The others in Pixar’s Top 4 for U.S. sales are “Incredibles 2” (2018) at $608 million, “Finding Dory” (2016) at $486 million and “Toy Story 4” (2019) at $434 million. In case you’re wondering, the original “Inside Out” scored $356 million domestically in 2015 — not too shabby.

Once “Inside Out 2” officially knocks “Jurassic World” out of the #10 spot on the U.S. box office list, it will then focus its sights on the other blockbusters in the Top 9. Just how high will it climb? Stay tuned. Here is the current list:

Notice that the highest-grossing films are almost all sequels, reboots or comic book fare. The only original film of the bunch is James Cameron‘s “Avatar,” which spawned its own successful sequel 13 years later. Meanwhile, Cameron’s “Titanic” is the only movie to be based on a real-life story, while the others are all complete works of fiction.
