What’s on this weekend

Here to celebrate the last weekend of August is a huge array of events and festivals happening in towns and rural villages. Whether you are soaking up the sun by the sea or seeking cultural happenings, this weekend has plenty of fun in store.

First up is the inaugural edition of the Pafos International Street Festivalwhich is on until Sunday. Every evening different street performances take place at various locations in Kato Paphos from 7pm onwards. Street artists from around the world perform live and for free, bringing the magic of street art, busking and the circus to Paphos town. Acrobats, magicians, rope walkers, jugglers, fire artists, comedians, clowns and more have travelled to be part of the festival. On Saturday, all artists will take part in a charity show held at the Mpania at 10pm, followed by a party with DJ Hadjimike on the decks.

Also coming up this weekend is one of the island’s biggest beer celebrations – SeptemberFest. Kicking off on Friday and running until next Thursday, the week-long festival at Akadimias Park returns for its 13th edition with a series of live performances from some of the biggest names of the Greek music scene. Apart from iconic music shows, the festival also features over 100 beer brands and a large variety of street food.

In a slightly more traditional mood, seaside Zygi village will host the 4th Fish Festival this Saturday at the harbour. Local fishermen will present fresh fish and the catch of the day while a market is on at the square with local produce and goods. Throughout the afternoon and evening, live music performances will take place as well as live cooking shows by local chefs.

Up in the mountains, the Youth Board of Cyprus will host the first edition of MountainFest. It will be a two-day affair split into two weekends. This Saturday the festival will take place in Evrychou while next Saturday, events will travel to Agros. Talks with youth organisations and ministers make up the programme as well as performances by Cypriot artists, a market and interactive events for all.

Windcraft Festival will meanwhile present an extended post-festival event this Sunday at Katydata village. A concert by the Maly music group (Vassilis Philippou and Odysseas Toumazou) will kick off at 7pm at the village’s Stavrinos Inn. The musicians will present music influenced by Cypriot sounds, speech and music as well as original compositions of traditional songs. Besides the free music concert, you will also be able to explore a literature corner with books by Cypriot authors and the Sounds of Memory exhibition all about stories told and untold.

Finally, for a taste of futuristic and immersive art, head to Kolla in Limassol as the Cyberness Market unfolds on Sunday. From 5pm until 11pm, a large art market will take place with a diverse range of local creators and brands, DJs, installations, performers and designers. An especially designed venue will teleport you into a cyber-realm blending technology with art. If you can’t make this event, the Market will be on every first Sunday of the month.
