Report: How Scarlett and Phillips performed on their loan debuts away from Spurs
After securing important loan moves for the 2024/25 season, two of Tottenham’s brightest young players have just made their debuts for their new clubs, getting a slice of Carabao Cup action.
Dane Scarlett has to succeed at Oxford
The pressure is very much on Dane Scarlett this season. After an exciting start to his Spurs career, a disastrous loan spell with Ipswich Town in the Championship last term stunted his development.
The young striker has joined Oxford United this time round, another newly-promoted club where he is expected to get regular minutes under his belt.
After playing just one minute of the Championship outfit’s opening game, Scarlett watched on as an unused substitute against Blackburn Rovers at the weekend.
But, Scarlett has now made his first start for the club, playing 83 minutes of their Carabao Cup tie against Coventry. The O’s lost the game 1-0, but Scarlett managed to get a shot on goal, won one aerial duel, and registered a 77% passing accuracy rate (WhoScored).
Ashley Phillips gets a winning start
Meanwhile, young defender Ashley Phillips had a better debut for his new club Stoke City in the cup, starting the game in a 5-0 away win over Middlesbrough.
The centre-half was replaced in the 76th minute, but put in a fine performance to that point to help his side secure a clean sheet.
Phillips even managed one shot, one key pass, one aerial duel win, and a huge 93% passing accuracy rate. He also registered three interceptions, two blocks, and one clearance (WhoScored).
Spurs Web Opinion
Both these players could and should have really good seasons with their loan clubs. I have a feeling Phillips will be heavily involved for Stoke and will be ready for the first-team with Spurs next year.
I do worry about Scarlett, though. He absolutely needs to have a good year after the setback last season.
