Man who let off fireworks in house smuggled ammunition from Republic to north

A 40-year-old man who had been arrested in Kioneli after having let off 17 fireworks inside a house in which he was staying as a guest had also smuggled a total of 41 live shotgun cartridges from the Republic to the north, it was heard in court on Friday.

The man appeared in court in northern Nicosia, charged with having illegally come into possession of explosives.

He had been arrested on Thursday for having let the fireworks off, with a search of his own house, which is located in Ayios Epiktitos, having turned up the 41 live shotgun cartridges.

Police officer Emre Koyun said the investigation into the matter is ongoing, and as such requested that the man be remanded in custody for three days.

Judge Gulay Ugur acquiesced, and the man will next appear in court on Monday.
