Forestry dept warns of extreme fire risk amid strong winds

The forestry department on Friday issued a warning regarding the heightened risk of forest fires until Sunday due to strong to very strong winds, with gusts reaching up to 6 Beaufort.

In a statement, the department stressed that, in similar conditions, firefighting efforts would be extremely difficult, if not impossible, should the blaze not be contained in its early stages.

“People are urged to exercise caution and avoid actions that could start a fire,” the statement said.

“The use of tools that generate heat or sparks, such as grinders, welding and cutting torches, should be avoided, as their use in areas with dry grass almost guarantees a fire.

“Furthermore, burning grass, branches and trash is prohibited, as is the disposal of cigarette butts. Fires for cooking or heating food are only allowed in designated barbecues within picnic areas.”

The department also advised that precautions should be taken to prevent fires caused by the exhaust of generators or water pumps used outdoors.

“Additionally, it is illegal to light fires within state forests or within two kilometres of their boundaries without permission. Violating this law, according to the Forests Law of 2012, can result in up to ten years in prison, a fine of up to €50,000, or both,” the statement concluded.

Anyone noticing smoke or fire is urged to contact the nearest forest station or call 1407 immediately.
