The Latest Phillies Injury Updates

  • Alec Bohm (left hand discomfort)
  • Status: Out of the lineup for Aug. 30 game vs. Braves
  • Bohm was removed from the Aug. 29 game against the Braves with what the Phillies said was “left hand discomfort.” He was in some pain after fouling off a pitch in a first inning at-bat against Charlie Morton. Manager Rob Thomson initially feared that he suffered a hamate injury, but it appears the Phillies have avoided the worst case scenario. “The X-rays, there was no structural damage,” Thomson said. “We got a break.”
  • Bohm will get treatment on the hand before and during Friday’s game. He could be available to pinch hit at some point. It’s unclear if he’ll be back in the lineup for Saturday’s game. (Updated by Destiny Lugardo on Aug. 30)

  • Andrew Painter (Tommy John surgery)
  • Status: Minor league 60-day injured list
  • The No. 1 overall prospect in the Phillies’ minor league system underwent Tommy John surgery on July 25, 2023.
  • Painter recently experienced both some soreness and an illness that temporarily halted his throwing program, but a club official told Phillies Nation that the soreness is normal for someone working their way back from Tommy John surgery and the illness is more what slowed Painter down. He was sick early last week.
  • According to Matt Gelb of The Athletic, Painter threw a bullpen session Thursday in Florida and the 21-year-old “remains on track to face hitters in a simulated setting later this year.” (Updated by Tim Kelly on Aug. 29)

  • Spencer Turnbull (right lat strain)
  • Status: 60-day injured list
  • Turnbull is throwing up to 120 feet this week. Thomson noted on Aug. 28 that if Turnbull does return this season, it will be as a reliever, because there just isn’t enough time remaining for him to build up and start against.
  • Thomson said “any time in September” when asked when Turnbull would need to be back by in order to be a consideration for the team in the postseason. (Updated by Tim Kelly on Aug. 29)

  • Luis Ortiz (Tommy John surgery)
  • Status: 15-day injured list
  • Ortiz underwent successful Tommy John surgery on July 11. (Updated by Destiny Lugardo on July 12)
