UN commits to ensuring human rights and equality in Afghanistan

Stephane Dujarric, the spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, stated in a press conference that the United Nations is working to ensure human rights and equality in Afghanistan.

Dujarric also mentioned that the UN will continue to engage with all stakeholders in Afghanistan, including the Taliban.

On Thursday, August 29, the Taliban’s Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice labeled the UN mission in Afghanistan as an “enemy” and declared that they would not cooperate with UNAMA.

In response to the Taliban’s recent law on virtue and vice, the UN mission in Afghanistan has criticized the law for limiting the rights of Afghan people, particularly women, and creating a climate of fear in society.

Dujarric responded to concerns about the Taliban’s decision to withhold cooperation by stating that the UN will continue its mission in Afghanistan as directed by the Security Council.

He emphasized that the UN’s work in Afghanistan will remain impartial, driven by good faith, and committed to upholding human rights and equality.
