‘One I was really keen on’ – Postecoglou admits he pushed hard for one Spurs signing
Ange Postecoglou admits he was the driving force behind Tottenham’s pursuit of Wilson Odobert, with the Australian delighted with the way the winger has settled in at the club.
Tottenham paid £25m for Wilson Odobert
Odobert arrived at Spurs in a £25m deal on the back of one season of Premier League football under his belt, with the youngster being one of the few bright sparks for Burnley in what was a campaign to forget for the Clarets last term.
The Frenchman’s signing was met with a mixed reception by the Spurs fan base, with some supporters understandably doubting if the newcomer is good enough to start regularly for a club with Champions League aspirations.
However, the 19-year-old showcased in his debut against the Toffees just why Postecoglou and the decision makers at Tottenham decided to bring him through the door, running at the Everton defence at every opportunity and getting the fans off their seats.
Postecoglou was really keen on Wilson Odobert
The Tottenham head coach admitted that he was desperate to bring the pacy winger on board, revealing that the transfer had to be pushed back due to the delays in the Dominic Solanke deal.
Postecoglou told Football.London: “Wilson was great last week. I was wrapped to get him. He was one I was really keen on all summer. We had to be patient with him as the Dom Solanke deal went on a bit longer than we thought it would and we had to get that done first.
“He did great for us. It was his first game, as a 19-year-old, and he was exciting to watch. He will get more and more comfortable with us. I don’t mind players coming in early and us giving them exposure early as it gets it out of the way.
“You can try to protect them but when you’re at a big club, get them out there and get them an understanding of what the team is like and he adapted really well.”

Ange clearly identified specific profiles for each position, based on the needs of the team.
Odobert might not be as big a name as Federico Chiesa or Jadon Sancho but he could prove to be the exact right fit for Spurs.
