Sweden provides nearly $7 million in humanitarian aid to Afghanistan

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has announced that Sweden has contributed $6.8 million to the Afghanistan Humanitarian Fund for 2024.

On Monday, September 11th, OCHA stated in a message on its official page that Sweden is the fourth largest contributor to the Afghanistan Humanitarian Fund.

According to the agency, Sweden’s assistance to Afghanistan from 2014 to date amounts to over 874 million Swedish Krona.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has warned that humanitarian funding for Afghanistan this year has sharply declined compared to previous years.

In its previous report, OCHA noted that only 25% of the requested budget of $3.06 billion for Afghanistan in 2024 has been funded.

Meanwhile, donor agencies have consistently warned of increasing needs and decreasing budgets to address humanitarian crises in Afghanistan.

According to the United Nations report, nearly 25 million people in Afghanistan need humanitarian assistance.

The dire humanitarian situation in Afghanistan is exacerbated by the forced deportation of Afghan refugees amid dwindling international aid and escalating needs.

The shortfall in humanitarian funding threatens the ability to meet the basic needs of millions of vulnerable Afghan civilians, underscoring the urgent need for sustained global support and intervention.
