UNICEF announces agreement to produce and supply 12 million MPOX Vaccines by 2025

UNICEF and its partners, including the Gavi vaccine alliance and the World Health Organization (WHO), are urgently seeking mpox vaccines for countries facing crises.

They issued an emergency tender on Sunday, September 1, to secure up to 12 million doses of vaccines by 2025, depending on manufacturing capabilities.

UNICEF will establish conditional supply agreements with vaccine makers to expedite procurement and delivery once funding, demand, readiness, and regulatory approvals are confirmed.

According to Reuters, this approach aims to ensure swift acquisition and distribution of vaccines.

The collaboration involves organizations like the Vaccine Alliance, Pan American Health Organization, Africa CDC, and WHO, which plan to donate vaccines from surplus stocks in wealthy nations.

WHO is currently evaluating vaccine submissions from manufacturers and expects to finalize emergency use approvals by mid-September.

The agency is reviewing applications for emergency licenses for vaccines produced by Bavarian Nordic and Japan’s KM Biologics.

WHO declared mpox a global health emergency in August due to an outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, spreading to neighboring countries like Burundi, with significant cases and fatalities reported.
