Club chief opens up on 24-year-old wide player’s move to Leeds United
Leeds United completed a deal to sign the Swiss wing-back Isaac Schmidt during the summer transfer window.
The 24-year-old joined Leeds United for a fee of around £2.5 million from FC St. Gallen. He will be expected to develop into a key player for the Whites, and it remains to be seen whether they can help them push for promotion to the Premier League this season.
Leeds missed out on promotion narrowly last time out and they will be desperate to return to the English top flight. Missing out on promotion has seen them lose key players like Georginio Rutter, Archie Gray and Crysencio Summerville this summer.
They will not want to lose their best players in the coming years and returning to the Premier League will certainly help them keep their stars.
Meanwhile Schmidt will be delighted with a move to the Championship and it will be a major opportunity for him to prove himself in English football. The talented wide player will look to make his mark in the Championship and establish himself as an indispensable asset for Leeds.
The Director and President of FC St. Gallen have now revealed that it is an exciting opportunity for the player and the club did not want to stand in his way when Leeds came calling. He added that the transfer was quite important for the club financially as well.
“Of course, we are saddened by Isaac’s departure so close to the end of the transfer window,” St Gallen sporting director Roger Stilz tells the club’s official website, feeling that it would have bene unfair to stand in Schmidt’s way.
“This move to England is a great opportunity for him. Most importantly, Isaac has earned this move with his performance and commitment.
“We would like to thank him for his great commitment to the Green Whites.”
Matthias Huppi, St Gallen’s president said: “In financial terms, this is probably the most significant transfer in the history of our club,” Huppi says. “We wish Isaac all the best for his new challenge.”
It remains to be seen whether the 24-year-old can hit the ground running in the Championship and transform Leeds in the attack and defence.
