Croatia’s largest island has hilltop towns, sandy beaches and it’s own airport with direct UK flights from £15
CROATIA’S largest island is often overlooked as a holiday destination in favour of ones like Hvar, despite being just as beautiful.
Located in the northern Adriatic Sea, Krk is Croatia’s largest island, which means it has everything Brits need for a last-minute summer break.
Krk is connected to the mainland via a toll bridge, so accessing the island is a breeze.
The large Croatian island, which is home to 20,000 residents, is home to a number of resorts, hotels, holiday homes and campsites.
With more than 68 towns and villages on the island, visitors won’t be able to visit them all in just one week.
One village away from the hordes of tourists is Vrbnik, located on the east coast.
Perched on top of the island’s limestone cliffs, the quaint village is home to winding narrow streets, cosy cafes and wine taverns.
There are several beaches in Vrbnik, including Beach Zgribnica in the heart of the town.
Meanwhile, Beach Kozica, also known as the silent beach, has been described as “dream bay” by visitors thanks to its picturesque waters.
Krk Town is another one of the main towns on the island with key attractions including St Mary’s Cathedral and Frankopan Castle.
The former fortress was originally built to protect the island against attacks from the sea.
Because of its sandy beaches, Baška is another popular spot on the island.
Baška is famous for its main beach, Vela Plaža – a natural beach with turquoise blue waters and a raft of yachts and boats.
Meanwhile, Vela Luka Beach is just 6km away from Baška, with fine pebbles and spots of sand.
Vela Luka Beach is impossible to reach by car, holidaymakers will have to head to the beach on a taxi boat.
Despite being hard to reach, the beach does have several facilities like a restaurant, deck chair, parasols and pedal boat rental.
Golden Beach (also known as Golden Bay) is another popular beach on the island.
Backed by vertical cliffs, the pebble beach is located on the southern part of the island and just like Vela Luka Beach it can only be reached on a boat.
Some of the other main resorts on the island include Malinska, Omisalj and Punat – popular because of its sandy beach.
There are plenty of accommodation options on the island, including hotels, villas and B&Bs.

Croatia certainly isn’t short of little-known islands that Brit holidaymakers can visit.
Another place Brits can visit is Drvenik Veli, also known as Drvenik Veliki, the island is just off the coast of Split in Croatia.
Located in the central Dalmatian archipelago, Drvenik Veli is only 2km away from the Croatian mainland.
Because the island doesn’t have any paved roads, cars are forbidden.
