Flash-Flood Watch issued for parts of Barbados

A Flash-Flood Watch has been issued for the western, northwestern, and central districts of Barbados due to anticipated heavy rainfall this afternoon.

The Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS) issued the alert at 10:30 a.m. today, warning of possible flooding in low-lying areas within the watch zone.

According to the BMS, unstable atmospheric conditions, combined with light winds and strong daytime heating, are expected to trigger moderate to heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms. Rainfall accumulations of 2 to 3 inches (50mm to 75mm) are forecast for late this morning and into the afternoon.

As a result, there is a high potential for significant flooding, particularly in areas already vulnerable to water accumulation.

The BMS also warns that this rainfall may lead to soil erosion, especially on bare or scarred land surfaces, and could cause water levels to rise in local rivers and other water bodies. Commuters are advised to anticipate delays, with some roads potentially becoming impassable, especially in and out of Bridgetown.

A Flash-Flood Watch is issued when conditions are favourable for heavy rainfall that could lead to flash flooding within a short period, typically less than six hours. It is important to note that while flooding is possible, it is not guaranteed.

Residents are encouraged to stay updated on the situation by monitoring announcements from the Department of Emergency Management (DEM), the BMS, and the Government Information Service (GIS) on their websites and social media channels.

The Flash-Flood Watch will remain in effect until 6:00 p.m. today or may be lifted earlier if conditions improve. (BMS)
