Scissortail Park celebrates five years with events all month long

OKLAHOMA CITY, Ok (KFOR) — Scissortail Park is celebrating big this month as it's their five year anniversary. To commemorate the anniversary, there are events happening all month long.

"I think it's our generation's gift to generations going forward. Hopefully they'll continue to invest in it and reinvent it and make Oklahoma City the city it can be," said Former Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett in 2017.

Former Mayor Mick Cornett made that comment long before Scissortail Park looks like it does now.

Park leaders said since then, there's been a lot of changes.

"Wow. The last five years have gone so quickly and such a dream," said Marlo Turner, the Vice President of Development at Scissortail Park.

The project took years to complete.

"What's exciting are events where the park is activated. That was the intent. We wanted a place for everyone to come and be able to use the park to their best abilities," said Turner.

Park leaders also said it's still being improved every day.

To celebrate five years of Scissortail Park, runners took a tour by racing in the "Core to Shore 5K".

"My favorite part is definitely the community and how it brings people from all ages together from pickle ball to basketball," said Caroline Baughman, an OKC resident.

"Music, all the outdoor activities, playing some pickle ball, some outdoor soccer, that's my favorite part," said Ashleigh White, an OKC resident.

Its not just locals who enjoy the park, though.

"It's this awesome you know fusion of the city...it's right next to the Devon tower, it goes all the way down to the river, it was a really really great place to run," said Joseph Erwin, who's from New Mexico.

A park worth millions of dollars takes up 70 acres in downtown OKC and there are still plans to expand in the future, even in the lower park.

"We're going to be thinking about the best way to use that to benefit our citizens, whether it might be flower garden, but it may be some more activities that we're adding. And so that is coming. So pay attention," said Marlo Turner.

As for now, Scissortail Park is celebrating five years with big events this September including a concert by the Oklahoma City Philharmonic.
