Soccer-themed library card available for the well-read

Club card

The Santa Clara County Library District is kicking off National Library Card Sign-up Month in September with a big assist from the Bay Area’s new National Women’s Soccer League team, Bay Football Club. Two original library card designs featuring the team’s logo will only be available through the district’s libraries, including the Milpitas Library, and bookmobile.

Bay Football Club was founded by four U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team icons: Brandi Chastain, Aly Wagner, Danielle Slaton and Leslie Osborne. The club is in the middle of its inaugural season at PayPal Park in San Jose.

High marks in diversity

The faculty at the two campuses in the San Jose-Evergreen Community College District has been ranked in the Top 10 for diversity in a national study.

According to the Chronicle of Higher Education’s Diversity Index, which was published recently and ranks “colleges with the greatest racial and ethnic diversity among faculty members,” San Jose City College ranks no. 6 and Evergreen Valley College No. 8 nationally among all two-year public institutions.

The Diversity Index measures “the probability that any two full-time instructional faculty members at an institution are from different racial or ethnic groups.”

“Representation matters,” Dr. Beatriz Chaidez, district chancellor, said in a statement. “It’s important that our students have educational role models with whom they can identify and an opportunity to learn from faculty from a variety of backgrounds.”

The San Jose-Evergreen Community College District encompasses the city of Milpitas.
