Armin Strom: Dual-Time Resonance GMT

Armin Strom just reached horological Diamond Medallion status: the significantly slimmed down Dual-Time Resonance GMT (Ref. WG24-DT.90) which just got launched during Geneva Watch Days displays two independent time zones in a 39-mm white gold case, the regulation systems are connected by a resonance clutch spring.

The resonance phenomenon is generated by packing two movements in a single case in such a way that the balance wheels of both movements naturally influence and regulate each other by sharing vibrations. As these balance wheels oscillate in anti-phase, they gradually become synchronized – and ultimately regulate each other’s motion.

The challenge of resonance, however, has always been to overcome its fragility and achieve resilience against the disruptive effects of gravity, temperature changes, and motion on timepiece oscillation rates. To that end, the Dual Time GMT Resonance offers a patented suspension system called a clutch spring, which maintains the resonance phenomenon. Inspired by Antide Janvier’s Resonance Clock, which he called a “Double-Dial Regulator,” the clutch spring acts as an efficient vibrational intermediary between the Dual Time GMT Resonance’s twin balance wheels. Operating in what scientists call a “shared mode of motion,” the balance wheels are empowered by their resilient synchronization to consistently prevent the oscillation-rate deviations that would ordinarily occur in response to real-world stimuli. The phenomenon of resonance is generated and maintained solely via the consistent transmission and reception of shared vibrations.

The twin dials feature a sky-blue grenage finish, surrounded by black azurage chapter rings set with applied polished baton indices that complement the faceted hands. The engraved and mirror-polished day/night indicators depicting the sun and moon are mounted on 24-hour wheels directly on the movement. For the first time, the twin balance bridge is crafted in steel with a flat surface that is hand-polished to achieve a mirror finish. At 6 o’clock, there is a three-dimensional ratchet wheel.

The Dual-Time Resonance GMT First Edition comes with a ten year warranty, and it is limited to 25 pieces (CHF 115,000 each).
