Ruben Selles Praises Reading’s Adaptability In Charlton Win

The Royals bounced back from defeat at Wrexham to see off the Addicks.

The Royals continued their good start to the season with a 2-0 victory against Charlton Athletic at the SCL Stadium.

Before the game, Charlton were unbeaten this season, but second-half goals through Charlie Savage and Sam Smith secured the points for the Royals.

Now, going into the international break, we sit in eighth, with two victories, one draw and one defeat.

Here is what manager Ruben Selles had to say. He spoke to the Reading Chronicle.

Selles on Charlton win

“It was a completely different game to Wigan in terms of the opponent and what they want to do in the game. I think we adapted well and started very fast and focused on what we needed to do.

“Almost the entire first half we dominated them and kept them in their half, only the last action of the first half there were a couple of mistakes but that’s why we have Joel. In the second half, we started slower, and they got more momentum.

“We talk about managing the key moments of the game and we managed to stay strong and not concede and in one action we scored the goal, the second and closed the game. I am very proud of the work, ethics and togetherness every time they train and with those performances, we can be in a good place every weekend.”

“He scored inside the box too against Wigan. Charlie has gone through a difficult period at the end of last season but at the beginning of this season we changed his position, and he is more of an eight.

“He is starting to understand the position really well, arriving in spaces where he can score and press and win second balls. He is more mature now and needs to continue so he is the player that we want. His game is getting better and better.”

“Adrian has, for last season and now, had ups and downs. Coming with us and looking like he was going to make the breakthrough, then going a bit backwards and making performances for the under-21s. Now is his opportunity and he is performing at the level he is supposed to.

“He is very focused and mature. Against Wrexham, he had a good performance, today he was more confident and started to do the things we wanted him to do one-versus-one. It is good to have another player stepping into the first team and making a difference.”

“He is okay. They have been going through the concussion protocol to see what it is. The next game is in two weeks so he will have plenty of time to recover.”
