Bissouma has been under fire of late

Despite netting an impressive solo goal in pre-season, Yves Bissouma managed to squander what was the perfect opportunity to become a key part of Ange Postecoglou’s squad, as the Malian teased he could be at the start of last season, before being suspended multiple times. (TransferMarkt)

Bissouma filmed himself inhaling laughing gas, leading Ange Postecoglou to subsequently suspend the midfielder, explaining to BBC Sport that the ex-Brighton man needed to rebuild trust with the group.

Postecoglou, perhaps surprisingly, started Bissouma in the next game following his suspension, with the 27-year-old repaying his manager’s faith by smashing in Spurs’ opener in the game, apologising to both the fans and Postecoglou in his celebrations following the strike.

Phillips has praised Bissouma’s performances in training

The goals suggested that Bissouma may be starting to turn his fortunes around in North London, with the midfielder’s teammate, Ashley Phillips, claiming that the Malian impressed in training in an interview with Pro Direct Soccer:

“Yeah, I’ve been impressed with Bissouma. He plays in that six role and he can play diags, he can punch it through. He has every technique in the locker as well. I’ve been impressed with him. He’s probably been the most diverse player in terms of passing for me”.

Phillips clearly seemed to be impressed from the short time that he spent training with Yves Bissouma, before embarking upon his latest loan move, this time to Stoke City, where the teenager will be hoping he can impress and challenge for a starting spot under Postecoglou next season.

As Postecoglou rightly suggested, Bissouma clearly needed a readjustment to his focus both on and off the pitch after a mixed season last year.

When the midfielder is on form and performing at his best, Tottenham’s performance as a team tends to mirror that, but unfortunately last season Bissouma was either not available consistently enough or appeared to lose the impressive form that he displayed in the early stages of last season.

Hopefully, as Phillips stated, Bissouma continues to perform and behave correctly as there is no doubt that he has all the talent to be a key player for Tottenham.
