My patio was covered in pesky weeds – a 30p hack killed them in no time, and they never returned
A GARDENING fan has revealed a 30p hack to get rid of your patio weeds, and make sure that they never return.
With the final days of summer now on the horizon, many of us will be aiming to spend as much time as possible outside, before the cold weather sets in.
And with this in mind, we want to make sure that our patio looks the best it possibly can.
Patio weeds can be a real problem in the summertime, as the warm weather causes them to grow faster.
Sharing her frustration at being unable to get rid of her own patio weeds, one woman posted in the Mrs Hinch Gardening Tips Facebook group: “Weeds spring up on our round patio all the time!
“I pull them out constantly but they are back within a week!
“What is the best way to keep them under control? Should I use a strong weed killer?
“If so any recommendations as [there are] so many different ones? Many thanks.”
The post was flooded with responses from avid gardeners, many of whom shared the same suggestion.
One person said: “I pour salt on the weeds while the kettle is boiling.
“Then I pour the kettle straight over the weeds.
“I put a lot of salt on.”
Another person said: “As long as you don’t want anything else to grow there: salt and boiling water.”
A third person said: “I put salt on my weeds and they never return until the following year.
“This year I will do the rest of my weeds with cheap salt from Lidl.”
How to repair broken patio slabs
THE paving specialists at Simply Paving told Fabulous how you can repair broken patio slabs, without the faff.
The experts advised: “If you have a loose paving slab, then it’s unlikely it can be lifted straight by hand. Instead, you will probably need a hammer and chisel to prise the paver free of your patio.
“To remove loose paving slabs without damaging your flagstones, carefully chip away at the mortar around the paving slab with the plugging chisel and rubber mallet until the slab comes completely loose.
“Then, slide the spade into the gap left by the mortar and prise the paver free of the patio.
“As you lift it up, place a short piece of timber underneath the spade to act as a lever, making it easier for you while protecting the slab underneath.
“When the paver starts to give, place the cylindrical wood underneath it and roll the slab out of the patio.”
A fourth person said: “I keep mine under control with salt…just salt.”
Salt is super cheap and can be purchased from the supermarket for as little as 30p.
It is a great natural alternative to toxic weedkiller.
It works by increasing the levels on ions in the soil and increasing osmotic pressure, which means the weeds will be unable to absorb water and will dry out.
Boiling water kills weeds by damaging their cell structure, which shocks and kills them.
