La Palma Island Tube
Photographer: José Miguel Rodríguez PérezSummary Author: José Miguel Rodríguez PérezShown above are vestiges of an ancient volcanic tube found in the northern part of the island of La Palma in the Canary Islands (Spain). The La Palma volcano has been active for 3-4 million years. Formations of very ancient lava stalactites and drip staphylites (solidified lava droplets in the shape of cones) are evident here. The precision or clearness of the formations suggests a very fluid and hot lava that quickly precipitated into the sea. Today much of the tube development has collapsed and only about 65 ft (20 m) remain -- its average height is about 6 ft (2 m). Photo taken on May 30, 2024.
