Caribbean culture takes center stage during West Indian Day parade
BROOKLYN, N.Y. (PIX11) – The annual showcase of Caribbean culture in New York City, the West Indian American Day Carnival, is set to kick off on Monday along the Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn.
At least two million people are expected to watch the parade, which starts at 11 a.m. in Crown Heights, according to NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey.
J'Ouvert has already begun as partygoers took to the streets before the sun rose in the Big Apple. Last year's J'Ouvert was believed to be the safest on record, according to the NYPD.
Celebrations were held all weekend leading up to the carnival, including one of the largest reggae outdoor dance parties Brooklyn has ever seen on Saturday and SOCAFEST on Friday.
The NYPD will shut down roads near Eastern Parkway ahead of the carnival. For more information on street closures, click here.
PIX11 News will stream the parade live from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
