Charlton Athletic Fans Verdict: Home Comforts
The Loyal Royals react to a really good win at home against Charlton.
We all know supporting Reading is an emotional rollercoaster - and the last week or so since the Wrexham defeat hasn’t been any different.
The seemingly endless takeover not going through before the end of the transfer window dampened any optimism we seemed to have, before a surprisingly open statement and a very late loan signing of Chen Campbell did a little to reverse the mood once again.
Even with all the turmoil and the agonisingly tedious takeover, this group of players continue to block out the noise. This time with an impressive victory over the Addicks. And here’s how the fans reacted to it...
Charlie Savage
Even though last November’s tactical switches were a big turning point for us as a club, Charlie Savage was probably the biggest loser from them. Harvey Knibbs moving centrally effectively kicked Savage out of the team, and he's had to wait patiently since.
But ironically, Knibbs’ injury has handed Savage a chance, and so far he’s taking it. A wonder strike in the League Cup, a goal against Wigan Athletic, and another beauty on Saturday - all of which were accompanied by strong performances - have impressed the fans...
Savage had a very good game as well, won a lot of second balls and tidied up in midfield well but also looked to get us moving forward. Brilliant strike for his goal and alongside Elliot was a great combination in midfield #readingfc

Charlie Savage really beginning to return goals for us. Absolutely love to see it. Hold on lads#readingfc

Savage my MotM today - not just for his goal, he set the tone by doing the running of 3 men today. Craig a close second for his most confident display yet. Wing & Elliott now offer different types of creativity when needed, whilst Mbengue & Joel get better every week #readingfc

Selles on Savage:

“He is more mature now and needs to continue so he is the player that we want. His game is getting better and better.”
Have to say we’ve been impressed with Charlie this season. Will give Ruben a tricky decision to make once Knibbs is back! #readingfc pic.twitter.com/GvBNfqqBIs
Yes a throughly deserved win by a very accomplished team Savage for me MOTM closely followed by the other ten players .!!!!!!#readingfc

Adrian Akande
He showed small moments in his league debut against Wrexham of what he can do, but he upped his game another level on Saturday.
Although he’s still very, very raw and has a lot of maturing to do, there’s definitely a talented player in there. He was a real threat all afternoon, always wanting to run at his man and make something happen. And he did make something happen in the second half, with a wonderful assist for Sam Smith.
The fans liked what they saw...
Who needs Azeez when you got Akande #Readingfc

I can't deny Charlie Savage's contribution, but Adrian Akande has made a very confident start to the season, and a couple of last-ditch saves from Joel Pereira make the afternoon perfect. #Readingfc 2 v 0 #Charlton

Been super impressed with Akande. Deserved that assist and hope it gives him some confidence to keep playing with freedom. The players reaction to him was great to see too. #readingfc

Akande has the potential to be insane #readingfc

Wild five mins for Akande.
— Greg Double (@Dubstep1988) August 31, 2024
Misses an absolute sitter after robbing their keeper (wasn’t a pen for me, great view of it)…
…but then reacts brilliantly to a quick throw, world class cross for Smith to tuck away.
This team. Unreal. #readingfc #cafc
Akande my word you are unreal #readingfc

An impressive win
This team really is made of stern stuff. I don’t think there’s a club in the country that has the kind of dark cloud hanging over it that we do, and for the players to keep their heads down, not let it phase them, and continue performing the way they are, is ridiculously impressive.
Hopefully this takeover saga is put to an end once and for all and this week and we can look forward to a brighter future - because the manager and the players deserve it.
The more they keep playing like this, the more we continue to fall in love with them...
What a win. Really happy with how we’ve started. Keep it moving. #readingfc

Big statement win.

Worth pointing out that we've played 3 teams already that are in the current top 6 as well, good opportunity to be in the mix at the end of season if we carry on what we're doing.#Readingfc https://t.co/sU1mUymMLp
What a fantastic win that is. @ruben_selles continues to work absolute wonders with us #ReadingFC

This team look much much better at seeing out games when ahead.#ReadingFC
Brilliant win against a strong Charlton side.
— Greg Double (@Dubstep1988) August 31, 2024
Timing of the goals perfect in different ways.
Savage’s came just as Charlton were getting on top, Smith’s came just after Akande missed a sitter.
Now if we could just get 14 different time zones to align... #readingfc #cafc
Reading FC v Charlton Athletic. Another home win with 2 goals from Savage & Smith (especially enjoyed Smithy's goal). Thought the lads played well & you can see that team spirit coming back ⚽️ ⚪️ #football #readingfc #2425season pic.twitter.com/gH1mW3NYCh

Conclusion
A really, really good win. I just love this team so much - so, so, so much. And Ruben Selles, what is there to be said that hasn’t already been said? For us to come out of these first four games - all of which were against teams that should be in and around the top six come the end of the season - with seven points, is a great start.
Now we get two weeks to relax - if such a thing exists for Reading fans - when hopefully we can get some new owners and maybe some reinforcements. URZ.
