The Concrete Pavilion

The Concrete Pavilion is a minimal residence located in London, United Kingdom, designed by Wadhal. At the heart of the design lies a concrete pavilion, its quartet of columns rising to support both the roof slab and the existing edifice. This architectural motif echoes within, where the kitchen island mirrors the pavilion’s form, creating a harmonious dialogue between exterior and interior. The result is a design language both monolithic and ethereal, with the island’s suspended form allowing space to flow unimpeded beneath, striking a delicate balance between gravity and levity. The facade’s composition achieves a poetic symmetry, with front and rear elevations engaging in a visual conversation.

This duality gives rise to two distinct garden-facing spaces: a contemplative courtyard and a studious retreat. The open-plan kitchen and dining area bask in an abundance of natural light, courtesy of generous roof apertures. A soft green concrete floor extends its hue throughout the ground level, while verdant steel screens add a layer of textural intrigue to the fenestration. Crowning the structure, a steel-clad dormer housing a bathroom provides a contemporary counterpoint to the traditional roofline. In a departure from convention, the project eschews standard steel supports in favor of substantial timber beams. These noble timbers shoulder the weight of the upper stories, honoring the dwelling’s heritage while pioneering innovative structural solutions.
