Wamego police recover stolen Sinclair dinosaur statues

WAMEGO (KSNT) - The Wamego Police Department (WPD) was proud to announce they had recovered a couple of stolen dinosaur statues.

Around 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 1 the Wamego Police Department took to social media asking for assistance in finding a couple of Sinclair gas station dinosaurs that were stolen overnight on Aug. 31. Police said a citizen was offering a reward for information that would lead to the recovery.

After the initial post, the owner of the dinosaurs, Eric Artzer, was surprised by the amount of community support in finding the statues.

"The community was all behind posting rewards, all sorts of help, assistance, anger and disappointment," Artzer said. "It reaffirmed my faith in people with the outpouring of concern."

Artzer said the thieves had to cut a logging chain and hoist the dinosaurs away. He said the smaller dinosaur weighed 100 pounds and the bigger one weighed between 150 and 200 pounds.

On Monday, Sept. 2 the WPD announced it had received a tip that led to the recovery of the dinosaurs. The police department shared a photo of the recovered dinosaurs in the back of a pickup truck.

The Wamego Police Department thanked an officer with the Saint Marys Police Department for his assistance in recovering the dinosaurs.

The WPD didn't announce whether any arrests were made in connection to the incident. More information will be added to the article as it becomes available.

"That’s still in the works with the police, they know who the perpetrator is," Artzer said.
