Kodai Senga, Christian Scott Hopeful for End of Season Returns
The Mets’ pitching rotation has been a surprising bright spot for them this season, even though it’s taken its fair share of hits. However, reinforcements, major ones too, might soon be on their way. The Mets provided injury updates on both Kodai Senga (calf strain) and Christian Scott (UCL sprain) Monday.
Kodai Senga
Senga, who suffered a calf strain in his only appearance this season, is working toward returning around September 26, when he’s eligible to come off the IL. Senga noted he understands the Mets’ final games might be their most important. If he’s not 100% by the time September 26 rolls around, he won’t push it. He did mention, however, that he is willing to appear in any capacity the Mets need him in if ready. This includes his usual starter role but also in a relief capacity.
In his one appearance this season, Senga allowed two hits, two runs, one walk and nine strikeouts in just over five innings pitched against Atlanta.
Christian Scott
Meanwhile, Scott, who’s been out since late July with a UCL sprain, has ramped up his baseball activities after being shut down. According to Anthony DiComo of MLB, Scott has been mixing pitches off a slope and hopes to pitch off a mound in a bullpen session soon. As 25 games remain in the season, DiComo notes Scott feels good and is confident he will pitch again this season.
Before hitting the IL, Scott appeared in nine games for New York, going 0-3 with a 4.56 ERA in 47.1 innings pitched. He struck out 39 pitchers and allowed 12 walks.
Entering Monday, the Mets sit one game behind division rival Braves for the final spot in the Wild Card race. While they face teams like the Reds and Blue Jays down the stretch, they have seven more games with the Phillies, three with the Braves and three with the Brewers. The last two weeks of the Mets’ season is a crucial stretch that will dictate their playoff fate, and having the likes of Senga and Scott would be a huge boost for this team.
