Salem-Keizer students return to school following mass layoffs

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- Salem-Keizer students are returning to school Tuesday, but things might look slightly different this year.

Students are returning to classrooms, but the massive layoff of almost 400 people looms over the district.

The district announced the layoffs in May to help fill a $71 million shortfall for the next school year, the biggest reduction the district has seen in over a decade.

The budget cuts were announced in April after two rounds of the district recommending budget cuts, first $31 million and then another $40 million.

In response to the budget cuts, one parent shared concerns saying there is no way that so few teachers can handle so many students.

"There's no way that one teacher can handle you know, 35 to 40 kids and meet all of their academic needs, any social needs," the parent said. "I mean, they can't do it. It's impossible. They're asking them to do an impossible job."

On Tuesday, sixth and ninth graders will be returning first, giving them time to adjust before the other grades begin on Wednesday.
