Parents, four-year-old, and two-year-old found dead in homicide
IRONDEQUOIT, N.Y. (WROC) — Two adults and two children were found dead inside a home in Irondequoit after crews were called there for a reported fire. The investigation began Saturday morning around 5:30 a.m. at a Knapp Avenue house.
Firefighters were met with flames once on scene, and according to Irondequoit's fire chief, were quickly able to get the fire under control. They also extinguished multiple fires throughout the home.
Crews searched the home and discovered four bodies that they say were found in the basement. After deeming it suspicious, the investigation was turned over to the Irondequoit Police Department.
Irondequoit Police identified the victims as 30-year-old Fraime Ubaldo, 26-year-old Marangely Moreno-Santiago, 4-year-old Evangeline Ubaldo-Moreno, and 2-year-old Sebastian Ubaldo-Moreno. Police say the family lived at the home over the last few years.
Chief Scott Peters confirmed that investigators know the causes of death, but are not ready to make that public. The chief said the victims' injuries were not consistent with that of a fire.
"This was a horrific scene. In almost 32 years of doing this job, I've never seen anything like it," said IPD Chief Peters.
Beyond the investigation, Chief Peters said there will be an increased police presence in the neighborhood to help residents feel at ease.
"[Neighbors] know that the family that lives there have been wonderful people, very nice," he said. "I hate to use the term that it's an 'isolated incident,' but this was not a random act."
Police are unsure of any connection between the family and any suspects. The parents did not have any criminal history or any history of domestic calls.
Chief Peters was unable to specify how many suspects his department and supporting agencies are looking for, and could not identify a motive Monday.
"Mom was being a mom protecting her children, and dad, I can't say. But, nobody should ever be able to do this or could ever think they could do that to a child. Let's just leave it at that," the Chief said. "This is Labor Day. It's supposed to be a joyous time spending time off with your family. This family doesn't have that anymore. This [case] will be resolved. This will be something our department will work on 100 percent. We won't stop until we do solve it."
A cause of the fire and official causes of death are still being determined by investigators.
