Price cap on bottled water remains undecided

Discussions in parliament to put a price cap on water were left in the air on Tuesday as the House commerce committee criticised the lack of response from a stakeholder.

Committee chair and Disy MP Kyriacos Hadjiyiannis said “a relevant service had committed” to preparing clarifications to a host of questions from MPs over the summer but had failed to do so.

He clarified this was the consumer protection service and without it sending anything to parliament “we’re back at square one.”

Hadjiyiannis said the efforts were part of a discussion on putting a price cap on water. Deputies had raised questions on how the cost of water is calculated, how this would affect competition and the impact on price.

The consumer protection service had been asked to provide these answers since the summer “but it refuses to submit or substantiate its intentions which it wants to implement as a law.”
