Xbox Game Pass new games for September include ancient gods and a lot of wheels

Age of Mythology: Retold’s Sept. 3 launch headlines September’s new games available to Xbox Game Pass subscribers on Xbox Series X and PC.

The rest of the lineup, which Microsoft announced Tuesday morning, is subtly transportation themed, ranging from sci-fi freight simulator Star Trucker, to Ubisoft’s multi-modal downhill racer Riders Republic and Saber Interactive’s third release in its offroad Mudrunner series.

Here’s what subscribers can look forward to in the first half of the month. All of these games are available to cloud, Xbox Series X, and Windows PC subscribers.

  • Star Trucker (Sept. 3) – It’s right there in the title, innit? You’re a trucker in outer space, hauling freight, scavenging for space salvage, and meeting up with fellow drivers who have chosen this strange career. Developed by Monster and Monster, Star Trucker appears to straddle the appeal of games like Truck Simulator with spaceflight titles where everyone tries the “I’m just a peaceful space trader” arc before resorting to all-out piracy. Star Trucker is also available on Steam for Windows PC players.
  • Age of Mythology: Retold (Sept. 4) – This is a reboot of the Age of Empires spinoff, which published for Windows PC in 2002. Basically, it’s like the real-time strategy franchise set in hallowed antiquity, except Anubis, Thor, and Zeus (among others) show up to make things real interesting. This time, it’s available on console.
  • Expeditions: A Mudrunner Game (Sept. 5) — Saber Interactive’s latest dirt-flinging, tires-spinning, counter-steering adventure launched in March (for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, too). It follows 2020’s SnowRunner, which was the sequel to the original MudRunner published in 2017. In Expeditions, players aren’t hauling goods through dangerous conditions, they’re trying to reach base camps for scientific explorations and experiments.
  • Riders Republic (Sept. 11) — Ubisoft’s skiing, snowboarding, and mountain biking live service game reviewed favorably after its fall 2021 launch, but somewhat receded from view since then. Riders Republic has been in season 11, Summer Season, since mid June. Dates for season 12 haven’t been announced yet, but it should arrive shortly.
  • Train Sim World 5 (Sept. 17) — Another game easily deduced from its title, Train Sim World 5 is a railroad tycoon-type. To be clear, we’re talking about modern railways and their engines; developer Dovetail Games says players can expect “iconic cities across three new routes.”

Games come and go from Xbox Game Pass

As always, the arrival of new games means the departure of some old ones. Here are those leaving on Sept. 15:

  • Ashes of Singularity: Escalation
  • FIFA 23
  • Payday 3
  • Slime Rancher 2
  • SpiderHeck
  • You Suck at Parking
