Collectors upset as Outer Wilds physical edition ships with wrong version on the disc

Outer Wilds, Mobius Digital’s acclaimed sci-fi adventure recently updated for PlayStation 5, got a disc-based retail release for that system and Nintendo Switch on Friday. There’s just one problem: The wrong version of the game is printed on the disc.

Annapurna Interactive confirmed the error in an X post the same day. Basically, players have the main game but without the Echoes of the Eye expansion, which launched in 2021 and was part of the online-only Outer Wilds: Archaeologist Edition that followed one year later.

The only option from there, apparently, was for the publisher to ask buyers to reach out to printer/distributor iam8bit and get a voucher code to download the DLC, which sort of obviates the point of putting a complete edition on a disc.

Outer Wilds launched for PlayStation 5 (and Xbox Series X) in 2021, with a free upgrade of the PS4 and Xbox One versions available to any who purchased those. The game has also seen a physical release on PlayStation 4 from Limited Run Games. Outer Wilds launched for Nintendo Switch via the Nintendo eShop at the end of 2023.

Annapurna says it is still investigating what went wrong, making no comment on whether correct discs will be reprinted and re-shipped. In replies to Friday’s tweet, fans pointed out that many had bought a physical release to keep it as a sealed, complete-in-the-box collector’s edition. Since it’s not even the right version, they say, there’s no point in owning it now.
