Former Newcastle boss Steve Bruce lands first job in two years as he takes reins at League One club in shock appointment
STEVE BRUCE has been named as the new manager of Blackpool.
The highly-experienced boss joins the League One side on a two-year deal alongside his long-term assistant Steve Agnew.
It marks Bruce’s first return to management since he was sacked by West Brom, with the Baggies 22nd in the Championship, in October 2022.
He previously managed Newcastle United between 2019 and 2021, when he left by mutual consent after a reported £8m payout.
He walked away from St James’ Park just 13 days after the Saudi Arabia-backed £305m takeover of the Toonside club, who subsequently appointed Eddie Howe.
One of a handful of coaches who has reached the milestone of 1,000 games in club management, the 63-year-old will take charge of Blackpool‘s training for the first time later this week.
Bruce said: “I’m delighted to be back in football and to take charge of this fantastic football club.
“I’d like to thank Simon, Julian and David for giving me this great opportunity.
“I look forward to meeting all of the staff and players in the coming days as we prepare for what we all hope will be an exciting season at Bloomfield Road.”
He takes over after the Tangerines sacked Neil Critchley on 21 August having started their campaign with back-to-back defeats.

The Seasiders are yet to win a game this season, having lost two and drawn two to leave them 22nd in League One.

Having achieved legendary status with Manchester United as a player, Bruce enjoyed time with Wigan, Birmingham, Sunderland, Hull City and Aston Villa during his pomp.
A short spell with Sheffield Wednesday ended when he took the job with Newcastle in the summer of 2019.
He spent just over two years with the Magpies during a turbulent time for the club as Mike Ashley‘s reign came to an end.
He managed 476 Prem games, winning 133, drawing 132 and losing 211.
Bruce was heavily tipped for the role of Jamaica national team manager, however, that was given to former England, Newcastle and Middlesbrough boss Steve McClaren.
Bruce’s first game in charge will be on Saturday, September 14 when Blackpool take on Exeter City.
