Lottery player wins $25,000 a year for life in Kansas

TOPEKA (KSNT) - A lucky lottery player just hit it big in Kansas, winning a cash prize that will keep coming back for years to come.

Kansas lottery spokesman Cory Thone told 27 News a person recently hit one of the big prizes for its Lucky 4 Life game on Sunday, Sept. 1. This winner matched five numbers, 17-22-27-35-42, but not the Lucky Ball, 17, to win $25,000 a year for life or $390,000 if the cash option is chosen. Lucky 4 Life is played in several different states each night of the week and works similarly to other lottery games people can play.

The biggest prize for this game is $1,000 a day for life, or $5.7 million for the cash option, with $25,000 a year for life being the second largest prize.

"A player won this prize last year as well, and we have had several second prize winners since the game launched in 2017," Thone said. "We have had one top prize winner of $1,000 a day for life in that time, who claimed their prize anonymously several years ago."

Thone said the winnings will be subjected to the usual 5% state and 24% federal tax that applies to other lottery winnings. This equates to a yearly payout of $17,750 per year or a lump sum payment of $276,900 for the cash option.

"Tickets start at just $2, and there is no multiplier to add to your ticket, so each play on the game is only $2!" Thone said. "We also like to remind our players to remember to have fun but to play responsibly and know their limits."

The winning ticket was sold in northeast Kansas. This area consists of the following counties:

  • Marshall
  • Nemaha
  • Brown
  • Doniphan
