'Groove Face' sentenced to prison after deadly shooting at Portland hotel

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – A man convicted of a deadly 2023 shooting at an Embassy Suites hotel near Portland International Airport was sentenced in late August.

According to court documents, 34-year-old Ramond Lawrence received a life prison sentence for the murder of 24-year-old Teonjenique Elizabeth Lashay Hudson Howard, as first reported by The Oregonian/OregonLive.

According to court documents, the shooting erupted at a party on March 15 for Hudson Howard in a hotel room when her partner and Lawrence's "associate" got into an argument and Lawrence started shooting.

After receiving several 911 calls reporting the shooting, authorities arrived at the hotel, on the corner of Northeast Airport Way and Northeast 82nd Avenue, shortly before 3 a.m.

Port of Portland officers reported witnessing Lawrence -- also known as "Groove Face" -- running away from the hotel, court documents stated, noting he ignored the officer's calls to stop before he escaped through a hedge bordering the hotel parking lot.

Authorities found Lawrence at a nearby convenience store, and noticed his hand was bleeding from an apparent gunshot wound while handcuffing him. Lawrence was taken into custody after being treated at a local hospital.

Officers found several guns in nearby foliage, including a 9mm Taurus with blood on the trigger guard, court documents stated.

Meanwhile, at the hotel, officers described walking into "a scene of carnage," according to court documents -- noting authorities witnessed blood smeared on the hotel lobby floor tiles and elevators.

Officers identified the shooting victims as Hudson Howard and 19-year-old Adrian Daeshawn Granville.

A Port of Portland spokesperson previously told KOIN 6 News that two additional victims – including a hotel security guard – were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries that night.

In June, Lawrence was found guilty of several charges including first-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon, and felon in possession of a firearm.

According to court documents, Lawrence had a previous conviction of manslaughter with a firearm in 2010.
