Slingerlands bakery, café closing after 15 years
SLINGERLANDS, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- A Slingerlands bakery and café is closing its doors after 15 years. Bake For You, located at 5001 Dunhill Court, is set to close on Sunday, September 15.
Wife and husband duo Linda Kindlon and Justin Cary first announced the closure in a Facebook post in May. "I have rheumatoid arthritis," Kindlon told NEWS10. "I can't be working 90-plus hours a week anymore." Kindlon also revealed she was diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2023 but has completed treatment and is doing well.
Bake For You first started in 2009 in a church kitchen before moving to its own brick and mortar space on Delaware Avenue in Albany in 2013. The bakery then moved to the Slingerlands space in 2019.
After the bakery closes, Kindlon said she'll be looking for a 40-hour a week job that's not in the food industry. "I want to have a better work-life balance," she said.
The timing of the bakery closure worked out, said Kindlon, as her husband's band reunited and is set to go on a 50-show U.S. tour starting in the fall. Cary is the bassist for the rock band Sixpence None the Richer, whose song "Kiss Me" became a hit in the late 1990s.
As the closure date is approaching, Bake For You has stopped offering lunch items and is focusing on its baked goods, breakfast sandwiches, and toasts. For its last days, Bake For You is open Wednesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to noon.
"We have a great Bake For You community," said Kindlon. "15 years; it's been wonderful. We leave on a high note."
