The bizarre Egyptian-themed temple in New York that’s home to a ‘UFO cult’

An odd building in Brooklyn decorated with hieroglyphic illustrations – and said to be related to a ‘UFO cult’ – is up for sale.

The temple is a community centre and meeting place for the dwindling Nuwaubian Nation, also known as Sabaeans.

Sabaeans are considered a ‘hate group’, for blending black supremacist ideas with worship of the Egyptians and their pyramids, a belief in UFOs and various conspiracies related to the Illuminati and the Bilderbergers, according to the Southern Poverty Law Centre.

The former leader of the group, Malachi Z. York, formerly Dwight York, eventually moved most of the group to Georgia before he was arrested on racketeering and child molestation.

But the Nuwaubian Nation continues to exist – though they’re selling their Brooklyn headquarters, with some offering up to $6million for the property.

What is the Nuwaubian Nation?

The Nuwaubian Nation, also known as the Sabaeans, was formed in 1967 by Dwight York in New York City.

Often referred to as a cult, the ‘movement’ mixes ideas of black supremacy, Egypt, UFOs and the Illuminati as ‘Nuwaubianiasm’.

As his movement began to grow in the early 1970s, Dwight York – who began going by the name ‘Dr. Malachi Z. York’ – eventually had 500 people living in apartment buildings.

The group also operated bookshops, clothing stores and a grocery store. Some chapters were opened in Trinidad, London and Toronto, according to the Southern Poverty Law Centre.

But the group was dark, with Dr. York giving his followers a quota to meet daily by selling incense and literature. He also chose his follower’s spouses and ‘mated’ them.

Within their beliefs, they cite that white people have a lighter skin colour due to ‘leprosy’ and ‘mating with dogs and jackals’.

Eventually, Dr. York identified himself as a ‘dog from outer space’ after moving to Georgia, and even operated an illicit nightclub in one of the pyramids they had in Georgia.

In 2002, the FBI and ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms) raided his Georgia compound and arrested York.

He was indicted on 74 counts of child molestation, 29 counts of aggravated child molestation, and one count of rape, and sentenced to 135 years in prison.

The movement has still remained, although dwindling in numbers. Some Nuwaubians still live around the property in New York, which is now up for sale.

One of the temple’s building managers, Senab York, told the New York Post that he is the son of Malachi York.

He said it was ‘sad’ that the property might be sold and knocked down, adding: ‘A lot of people, they love taking pictures of this building. They love it. People love Egypt… To see it in Bushwick, like, “this came out of nowhere”.

It appears others love the building too – or the land its sitting on. A broker for Compass Realty told the Post they thought the bookstore alone would fetch $2million.
