ICRA National Championships 2024

Podium places for all Royal Cork Yacht Club boats at the 2024 ICRA Nationals

This years ICRA National Championships was sailed on the waters of Dublin Bay, under the watchful eye of the ICRA Commodore (our own Vice Admiral Denis Byrne).

The event was hosted by the Royal Irish Yacht Club and it attracted the best racing yachts from around the country.

It occurred from Friday 30th August thru Sunday 1st September, unfortunately the same weekend as our At-Home Regatta.

Three boats from the Royal Cork Yacht Club travelled to compete in the event, in the hope of winning medals and silverware for the club.

Conditions on the Friday were light, necessitating a delay to the start of racing. The breeze finally arrived and several great races occurred in the sunshine.

There was slightly more breeze on the Saturday, again with fantastic sunshine. Racing began as scheduled.

Sunday was a duller day and brought very light breeze, only facilitating one race for one fleet and no race for any of the other classes.

The Jones Family’s JellyBaby competed in Class 0 and managed to secure an impressive race win on the Saturday, finishing in Bronze medal position in their class on IRC.

The Dwyer’s SwuzzleBubble completed in Class 2, winning several races, to successfully defend the Gold medal that they won last year in their class on IRC.

The Downing’s Miss Whiplash also competed in Class 2, securing the Silver medal in their class on both IRC and ECHO.

The overall winner of the event was Outrajeous, a J109 from Howth Yacht Club, successfully defending the title that they also won in 2023.

Well done to all three of our boats, for doing our club proud.

Several other club members crewed on other boats, including Killian Collins and Derek Moynan, who both crewed on Outrajeous.

Best of luck to JellyBaby, which has stayed in Dublin, to compete in the IRC European Championships which will occur there later this month.

Let’s hope for a bit more breeze for that event – the recent form that they have shown by winning their class at Cowes Week in the J122 will be very difficult to match in suitable breeze.

Next years ICRA National Championships will be hosted by Kinsale Yacht Club, as part of the Sovereigns Cup, from 25th June to 28th June.

The club have already secured sponsorship for the event and our own Anthony O’ Leary will be the Principle Race Officer.
