Coronation Street legend who played one of soap’s best loved-characters left wife £21k in his will

CORONATION Street actor John Savident, who played foghorn-voiced butcher Fred Elliott, left £21,000 in his will.

His estate went to wife Rona, documents show.

They wed in 1961.

John, a dad of two, joined the police in 1955 before becoming an actor.

He had many film and television roles, including in Yes, Minister and A Clockwork Orange.

But it was only when he joined Corrie in 1994 that he became a household name.

He played madcap Fred — known for his booming voice and saying things twice separated by the phrase “I say”.

His character died of a stroke in 2006.

His final words as Fred were: “Be happy, I say, be happy.”

John went on to feature in pantomimes.

His last screen appearance was in Holby City in 2012.

He died aged 86 in February
