Teacher shot at Bronx middle school: police

BRONX, N.Y. (PIX11) – A teacher was shot at a middle school in the Bronx Wednesday, the day before school starts in New York City, police said.

The bullet entered a sixth-floor classroom through a window from outside the Webster Avenue school and then hit the 33-year-old teacher in the hand, according to police and a school safety agent union representative.

The victim was rushed to an area hospital around noon, according to the FDNY. The teacher's injuries are not life-threatening, according to New York City Department of Education spokesperson Jenna Lyle.

There were no students in the school when the shooting occurred, sources said.

"This egregious display of violence is both upsetting and reprehensible," the Department of Education spokesperson said. "We will provide support additional support to this school community."
