IPL Value Witnessed a Major Dip of 10.6% WPL Value Rises Massively

A s per a report, the increasing popularity of IPL seems to have an effect on its value. It came out that IPL has seen a decline of 10.6% in it’s value whereas the Women’s Premier League (WPL) has witnessed a constant 8% rise in its value.

IPL’s value dropped from Rs 92,500 crore in 2023 down to Rs 82,700 crore in 2024.

WPL’s value has gone from Rs 1,250 crore in 2023 to Rs 1,350 crore in 2024.

The report revealed that the upcoming merge of Disney Star and Viacom18 will have an effect on the media rights of IPL, which has had an influence of the value of IPL. They currently have the IPL’s respective TV and digital rights for a period of 5 years under a deal of Rs 48,390 crore.

Now when the next bidding takes place, the competition will be majorly reduced. The report “Beyond 22 Yards – IPL’s Legacy and WPL’s Vision” pointed out this already mentioned fact. “This narrowing competitive field may stifle the aggressive bidding that has historically driven up the media rights prices.”

The merging of Zee-Sony, which failed to happen, also played an important role in this proceeding. OTT platforms like Amazon, Apple, and social media did not express their willingness to get themselves involved in the process of bidding, even though they are quite heavily interested in NBA and NFL.

“Although these tech-giants have made inroads into other sports leagues like the NBA, NFL, EPL, the unique monetization of Indian market and IPL’s reliance on advertising and subscription model pose significant hurdles,” the report added.
