I tried all supermarket cheesecakes – the winner was creamy and incredibly moreish but frustratingly was most expensive

CHEESECAKE has been voted Britain’s favourite teatime treat – even beating the classic Victoria sponge.

Chocolate cake and carrot cake came in second and third places respectively, followed by lemon drizzle then the sponge and jam classic.

Waitrose also revealed online searches for cheesecake have risen by 53 per cent in a month and sales of its sharing cheesecakes have risen by 20 per cent in the past two weeks.

So if you don’t have time to make your own, which supermarket offering is the tastiest?

We asked Lynsey Hope, to tuck in and find out . . .

Waitrose New York Cheesecake Slices

£3.75, 403 cal per slice

This Waitrose option had a delicious bite and was buttery[/caption]

JUST the right hint of vanilla but the texture should have been lighter and creamier.

The biscuity base was cooked perfectly and didn’t crumble away. It had a delicious bite and was soft and buttery.

The slices are a great option if just want a portion but you could pick up a whole cake at other supermarkets for the same cost.

Asda The Bakery Vanilla Flavour Cheesecake

£3.50, 295 cal per slice

This Asda option was a great price but the base had a strangely oaty taste[/caption]

I LOVED the topping. It was rich, creamy and had a lovely fresh feeling.

It looked lovely too – you could almost pass this off as homemade.

My only complaint is the base had a strangely oaty taste and was a little thick and had a dense feeling to it.

It’s a real shame the base let this down as it is a great price.

M&S New York Cheesecake

£5.75, 373 cal per slice

This M&S New York Cheesecake is Lyndsey’s favourite[/caption]

CREAMY with a lovely vanilla flavour. The texture is light and airy and I found it incredibly moreish.

The base cuts splendidly and doesn’t crumble into a mess as others did.

Size wise, it is a smaller round but much deeper than other supermarket offerings.

Calorific, but you get a good-sized slice. My favourite.

Morrisons Lemon Cheesecake

£4, 288cal per slice

Oliver Dixon
The Morrisons Lemon Cheesecake had a nice mousse-like texture[/caption]

NO vanilla cheesecake on offer at Morrisons so I went for this lemon one, which was fruity and delicious.

The lemon was zingy with a lovely after taste and it wasn’t too sweet.

It had a nice mousse-like texture.

The base was a little too crumbly though and I felt it needed more butter to bind it.

4/5

Sainsbury’s New York Vanilla Cheesecake

£4.35, 328 cal per slice

Oliver Dixon
The Sainsbury’s New York Vanilla Cheesecake was disappointing[/caption]

APPETISING appearance but it was heavily covered in icing sugar, which made it rather too sweet and verging on sickly.

The vanilla flavour wasn’t strong enough for me and, overall, I found it to be a little bland.

It would be all right if you added some fruit and cream but on its own it was disappointing.

Aldi The Dessert Menu New York Cheesecake

£3.25, 298 cal per slice

Oliver Dixon
This Aldi dessert was buttery and delicious[/caption]

LOOKS very similar to the M&S cheesecake with the same Madagascan vanilla flavouring and visible seeds.

As I tucked in, I found it very similar too.

The base was buttery and delicious while the topping was thick and creamy enough to leave cheesecake fans happy. Cheaper than M&S.

4/5

Lidl Deluxe New York Cheesecake

£3.99, 331 cal per slice

Oliver Dixon
This Lidl option was too crumbly without any crunch[/caption]

I COULD only find frozen options at Lidl, which means you need to remember to get it out of the freezer four or five hours before you want to eat it, ideally overnight.

It has a good proportion of cake filling to the base, which has a sweet vanilla taste with a sour tang.

But it was too crumbly without any crunch.

3/5

Tesco Vanilla Cheesecake

£4.30, 316 cal per slice

Oliver Dixon
The Tesco Vanilla Cheesecake turned to mush as you try to cut it[/caption]

I WAS really disappointed with the base. The biscuit part just crumbled away.

It was too soft and just turned to mush as I tried to cut it.

The topping should have been creamy but was more greasy and I could hardly taste the vanilla at all.

Don’t waste your calories on this. Try a Victoria sponge instead!
