Buckeyes coach Ryan Day adapts to new responsibilities

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- As Ohio State gears up for it's second game of the season, head coach Ryan Day is adapting to a new in-game role.

This weeks game will see the Buckeyes take on the Western Michigan Broncos at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, the second MAC opponent in a row for Ohio State. Day said among other changes this season, he is adapting to a new assignment as head coach where he no longer runs the offense or calls plays.

Instead, offensive coordinator Chip Kelly and defensive coordinator Jim Knowles manage the play-to-play decision making. Day said he is still heavily involved in offensive and special teams meetings, and he meets with the defense each Sunday. Daily staff meetings also remain the same, but the time he has before practices has shifted.

Instead of being locked on the offense, Day said he watches game film of the team's next opponent, which he uses to craft his messages to the team. Day also said these changes have provided new opportunities to communicate.

"Maybe call a player in, have some one on one conversation, walk walking a locker room, get down the hallway and make sure that everybody's aligned across the building," Day said. "When you're in there kind of on a day-to-day basis, grinding on the film, sometimes they can get away from you."

Day said he is still very involved, and is on headset with Knowles and Kelly throughout the game.
