Cristiano Ronaldo breaks down in tears as 39-year-old becomes first player EVER to score 900 goals

CRISTIANO RONALDO has scored the 900th goal of his career during Portugal’s clash with Croatia.

The Real Madrid and Manchester United legend, 39, is the first player in history to achieve the feat.

And he was emotional after netting the six-yard tap-in from a Nuno Mendes cross as he dropped to his knees and teared up on the pitch.

It comes after he revealed last week he is aiming to reach 1000 goals before retiring.

Speaking on his new YouTube channel: “Soon I will do 900 and, after, I will beat 1,000.

“I want to reach 1,000 goals. If I don’t have injuries, this, for me, is the most important. I want that.

“It’s the best marker I can have in football. There will be one difference: all of my goals have videos, so I can prove that.”

Pele is considered the highest goalscorer of all time by some, with Fifa crediting the late Brazil legend with 1,281 goals.

But the Brazilian Guinness world record holder amassed his haul with the help of around 550 exhibition and amateur matches.

His total in official career matches is 762, leading to a long-standing debate over which records are most credible.

Cristiano Ronaldo's goalscoring breakdown

  • Sporting Lisbon: 5
  • Manchester United: 145
  • Real Madrid: 450
  • Juventus: 101
  • Al-Nassr: 68
  • Portugal: 131

Ronaldo scored 118 goals in 292 games for Man Utd after netting five at Sporting Lisbon at the start of his career.

Then during his nine years at Real Madrid he bagged an astonishing 450 in 438 appearances.

A three-season stint at Juventus added another 101 goals, before his second stint at Old Trafford brought a further 27.

He then moved to Saudi Arabia after signing for Al-Nassr, scoring 68 in 74.

Meanwhile at international level, he now has 131 goals in 212 games for Portugal.

Yet despite the astonishing goalscoring record for his country – and Euro 2016 triumph – he was heavily criticised for his performances at this summer’s Euros.

Ronaldo failed to score in Portugal’s five matches as they were eliminated by France in the quarter-finals.
