Intuitive Archaism
Intuitive Archaism is a minimalist furniture collection by the Sèvres-based design and sculpture practice, Atelier Cedric Breisacher. Featuring a series of side tables, shelves, and stools, each piece within the collection is hand-carved from local forest wood and is an ode to the atelier’s founder, Cedric Breisacher’s meditative process of creating a dialogue with traditional hand tools and materials.
Using a hammer and gouge, a woodworking tool used to carve intricate details, Breisacher repeatedly and methodically carves into pieces of Campeche wood to reveal each piece’s distinct form.
“It is not the hand that gives shape by imposing a constraint on the material, rather, it is the material that reveals its own unique identity through the sculptural process. The tool becomes a mediator of individuation between the hand and material.” Shares Breisacher on his process.
The result is a series of works characterized by carvings reminiscent of flint knapping, a craft technique that dates back to prehistoric times, signaling to Breisacher’s search for simplicity and a desire to return to the essential.
After careful carving, each Intuitive Archaism piece is finished with pastel colors derived from natural plant dyes which yield a range of approachable hues from soft greens, peaches, and warm purples.
The overall collection showcases Atelier Cedric Breisacher’s approach to creating organically minimal furniture and objects — pieces that celebrate the inherent beauty of natural materials and traditional craft techniques.
