WhoScored say Cristian Romero is ‘statistically the best centre-back’ in England
WhoScored’s stats suggest that Cristian Romero has been the best centre-back across the Premier League so far this season.
Cristian Romero was at the top of his game last season
Romero had his best season in a Tottenham shirt last term, with the defender managing to cut out the moments of madness from his game and appearing to have matured with the additional leadership responsibilities handed to him by Ange Postecoglou.
The 26-year-old formed a fantastic partnership with Micky van de Ven, with their pair complementing each other very well.
However, the Argentine may not be entirely happy with the way he has started the season, making a couple of errors which have cost his side goals.
The most notable one came in the 2-1 loss to Newcastle, with the defender vacating the area and deciding to press the ball, thus leaving Harvey Barnes unmarked in the box for the Magpies’ opener.
Is Cristian Romero the best in the Premier League?
Despite this, according to Whoscored, Romero’s metrics are excellent in the three Premier League games so far this season.
Romero ranks quite highly for successful tackles, having made nine in the three outings so far while also winning the same number of aerial duals.
The centre-back has been given a rating of 7.37 by the data analysis platform, which is the highest in the division, with William Saliba and Virgil van Dijk following in second and third place respectively.

I do not think the Jamie Vardy goal can be blamed on Romero as the Argentine had to mark the player at the near post but he did show poor judgement for Newcastle’s first goal last Sunday by deciding to press the ball even though Tottenham were short of numbers at the back.
