Lee Carsley speaks out on Mason Greenwood’s England future after former Man Utd star’s impressive start at Marseille
LEE CARSLEY has confirmed he “cannot consider” Mason Greenwood for England.
The former Manchester United forward, 22, has scored five goals in his opening three Ligue 1 games since joining Marseille in the summer.
He also racked up 16 goal contributions on loan at Getafe last season after 18 months out of the game having been charged with attempted rape, assault, and coercive behaviour in January 2022.
The charges were dropped in 2023 and he returned to action in Spain last year.
But England‘s interim head coach Carsley, who recently named his first squad as Three Lions boss, insists Greenwood is not in the frame for a call-up.
He said: “Mason wasn’t a player that we can consider to be honest, no.
“I’m aware of how he’s doing but he wasn’t under consideration.”
Greenwood’s only England cap came in 2020 as a substitute in a 1-0 win over Iceland.
He was later thrown out of Gareth Southgate‘s squad after breaking strict coronavirus guidelines when he and Phil Foden tried to sneak FOUR girls back to England’s hotel.
SunSport understands he has been approached by Jamaica to play under ex-England boss Steve McClaren.
Greenwood is eligible to play for Jamaica through his father, Andrew.
Meanwhile, Carsley also confirmed he will not sing the national anthem in Dublin on Saturday when England take on Republic of Ireland – who he earned 40 caps for.
Carsley, who was born in Birmingham and has an Irish grandmother, said: “This is something I always struggled with when I was playing for Ireland.
“The gap between your warm-up, your coming on to the pitch and the delay with the anthems… it’s something that I have never done.
“I was always really focused on the game and my first actions.
“I found that in that period I was wary about my mind wandering off.”
He then went on to add: “I was really focused on the football and I have taken that into coaching.
“We had the national anthem with the Under-21s also and I am in a zone at that point.
“I am thinking about how the opposition are going to set up and our first actions within the game.
“I fully respect both anthems and understand how much they mean to both countries. It’s something I am really respectful of.”
